This item is a fairly thick piece of metal with a number of holes. I say pretty thick, I mean if I grab it with my thumb and forefinger and throw it it stays hard. I mean what do you want? I could take my micro caliper and tell you how thick it is, but what you really want to know is if it's firm and strong. He doesn't speak. It leaves a mark when you hit someone with it. My only concern is that the dimensions are engraved and painted on. When the color rubs off, it becomes difficult to read. However, there is no indication that there really is a problem. Just my experience with similarly labeled items like measuring cups (I cook sometimes too, so what). This is an essential tool in any workshop, but I wouldn't spend too much money on it. It's more legible than the plastic alternatives, but I don't think it's any more (or less) reliable.
