Doesn't work for DVR recording

I am writing my review based on my one specific need for this device: recording video from my ISP provided by the DVR. I don't want to record protected content such as sports or premium content. I have two local news programs that have aired recently with friends and family that I have recorded on our DVR. In the past, to record and store such material, all you had to do was press the record button on the VCR and then get a handy VHS tape for archiving. The good old days are gone. Modern DVRs are more complex, most likely encrypted and protected content will require a workaround for archiving. Even something as ridiculously simple as recording a clip from the evening news for the archive became a complex project. Well, this experience was the reason why I never tried this path in the past. That does not work. I'm not surprised because too many variables can cause it to fail. When I connect this device to my computer and DVR, I can't get any content from the DVR to my computer. I downloaded the recording software to a Windows 10 laptop but it never gets a video signal. Same problem on my Mac. I have a signal between cable box and TV. With this device in the middle. The capture box appears to be working because it transmits a signal that drops out as soon as I unplug the USB from my computer. I'm assuming it's USB powered. I then tried running the signal from the recording box through my surround sound receiver and then to my computer to see if that would help, but got the same result. I've been playing around with the settings and connections for a few days, but it still doesn't work. It was as long as my patience would allow. In the end, I came to the conclusion that it just wouldn't work for my specific needs. I'm a typical home AV user, not an AV enthusiast. I just want to capture and archive a few minutes of a recent local news program. I try not to include explicitly copyrighted content like the Super Bowl or Game of Thrones. In the age of "improvement," why is something that was once so easy now so difficult? I will not clearly blame this device as the reason is most likely my ISP. I don't have the time or patience to find out. If I had bought this unit it would have already been returned for a refund. It's amazing how something that was so easy in 1985 is almost impossible in 2019 without extensive experience or AV gear. My rating reflects the suitability of this device for the specific job I need it for. This can be handy for recording from other devices, but if you need to record video from a DVR it doesn't work, at least not on my DVR.
