[Update-2] Works on one of seven systems. I tried to extract from

. I received this HDMI video capture device from StarTech specifically to write a review. However, I try to be honest and open in all my reviews. (Please see the attached pictures.) [Update-2] I took a star off 4 down from 3 because the sound quality for the video I recorded was horribly poor. sync like a few seconds away. Even for an old XP system the recording wasn't good and I just couldn't get it to work on any other system. I like this idea and hope that a possible BIOS update for the…

Doesn't work for DVR recording

I am writing my review based on my one specific need for this device: recording video from my ISP provided by the DVR. I don't want to record protected content such as sports or premium content. I have two local news programs that have aired recently with friends and family that I have recorded on our DVR. In the past, to record and store such material, all you had to do was press the record button on the VCR and then get a handy VHS tape for archiving. The good old days are gone. Modern DVRs…

Sound and video quickly become out of sync

I had high hopes for this video capture device which is marketed as easy to connect and easy to use and the features that actually work are pretty good indeed intuitively, after many repeated attempts of this device, it seems impossible to synchronize audio with video. Image capture is bright and vibrant, as strong as source material captured via an HDMI cable, compact and works with downloaded software from the manufacturer integrated into the device via a USB-C cable. The controls are fairly…

  • Expensive but decent
Cons
  • Definitely a bad product

My son is a YouTuber. He's not a pro or famous but he's still working hard to record his Fortnite videos and save them to YouTube. But sometimes he wants to edit videos and also play other games like Geometry Dash. We have a pretty solid computer with an Nvidia 1070 graphics card, but sometimes it's too difficult for the computer to display a game at 3440x1440 (it has a widescreen monitor) and record and save it. Our solution (instead of spending $1,500 to upgrade his graphics card) was to get…

Good form factor, unfortunate 1080p limit. Conditionally recommended.

I've used software and hardware capture solutions for decades (I've even had Video Toaster and Dazzle setups!), but for the last few years I've mostly relied on software capture. It was fine when my source was a PC, but otherwise it wasn't perfect. Time for the StarTech.com HDMI to USB-C Video Capture Device I used the StarTech.com HDMI to USB-C Video Capture Device in Windows 10 with VirtualDub. I haven't used any other capture apps as the UVC API layer should be the same for all. I had no…

StarTech USB HDMI Video Capture Device

I wanted to use this audio and video capture device to save software demos and other video streams on my Windows and Mac computers. I connected the device to my Windows PC using the included USB-C cable, and then connected my Android tablet to the port labeled "HDMI In" using the included HDMI cable. I then connected a microphone to the 3.5mm port labeled - -Audio In - to record a voiceover along with the captured video. I had to set up the device to change the audio input setting from HDMI to…
