Battery DOA: Fire Safety

I have carbon monoxide detectors. I installed and followed the instructions to test the device. Tested OK then followed by one beep per minute meaning the battery needs to be replaced. ? I took the battery out and put it back in but it was beeping at a rate of 1 per minute. Disappointed that I had to buy new batteries from the start.
