Very good when it works

I bought this for the Canon Pixma MP830. Compatibility not checked, purchased. Luckily it was compatible. Here is an updated compatibility list, others may work (ftp://ftp.dlink.pl/dp/dp-g310/documentation/DP-G310_doc_en_Printer-compatibility-list_20080121.pdf). I give it 3 stars for many reasons: 1. With a multifunction printer like the MP830 you can't scan from the device, you have to connect the printer directly to your computer to scan.2. It does not support WPA encryption. I've heard that versions newer than A1 support it, but haven't tested it.3. He's overheated. My device froze during print jobs that needed to be restarted. I unscrewed 2 screws on the bottom of the case and it has been working for 3 days without rebooting.4. In the manual, the IP is 192.168.0.10 to enter. It might not be for everyone. In my case my router gave it the IP 192.168.1.141. If you can't connect to IP address 0.10, log into your router and see what IP addresses it gave out. Type them all into your web browser one at a time (shouldn't be many) and once you get the correct IP address, write them down. This will forever be the IP address of the DP-G310. After I solved all these problems, it took about 10 minutes to set it up. Setup is pretty easy and I got the device working with XP (all versions) and Vista Home Premium. One more thing: to set up the DP-G310, you need to connect it to your router via regular Ethernet or to the back of your computer via a crossover cable. If you have the ability to set up a device by connecting it directly to your router, I encourage you to do so. The device will get hot as it is, using WiFi will likely only make it hotter. If you are using a wireless connection, it also means that your router's security is non-existent or weak (WEP).
