Review on VAlinks USB 2.0 External Sound Card: 6 Channel 5.1 Surround & Optical S/PDIF Adapter for PC, Windows 10/8/7/XP Compatible by James Ssims

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Great for introducing Toslink for use with the Jack sound server on Linux.

This is a good sound card for what it has, you get a toslink in and out as well as other normal connections. I'm using this for Toslink login on a running Jack audio server. Gentoo Linux and it does the job pretty well even though I can only run one Linux login at a time. No problem, bought exclusively for the Toslink entry anyway! My Windows machine has a Toslink output, so I use this sound card exclusively to transfer audio from a Windows machine to a Linux Jack sound server without the glitches that analogue cables can cause. .There is one small detail about this sound card that I think could be improved, the sound card only runs at 44.1kHz which I probably don't need as 99% of the sound output goes to the Toslink input on this sound card 44.1 kHz. KHz anyway, but soundcards built into motherboards these days have a default frequency of at least 48kHz, so I just thought this was worth bringing up. I assume this is a limitation of the sound chip in the sound card. I'd give it a 4 star rating, but being the only Linux compatible Toslink input sound card I found it reasonably priced despite the bitrate sacrifice. . I like it! I haven't checked other ports on the card, I use it strictly for Toslink input and output of analog signals through the computer motherboard audio ports. This card works in this setting and I am very happy with the purchase! I don't know the quality of the card's other ports so can't say if I recommend it to other people, but if anyone reading this also needs this sound card for Toslink input only and uses it in a setup like mine , then I recommend it unless someone has informed me of a Linux compatible sound card with Toslink input so I can use it on a Jack sound server, allows a bitrate above 44.1kHz and has a decent price . I also tested Toslink a bit on Windows and it definitely works, so don't worry I tested more than Linux at least!

  • Good product for the price
