Dust Collector Basics, and why this machine is far too underpowered

It is REALLY important that you do some research on your specific needs before going in head first for a dust collector. I find that this collector is far too small for just about ANY home shop, and let me tell you why.First, some great references are located below in the comments (I am not allowed to link outside ebay in this review)The fact is that for the average person, you may be tempted to hook up this dust collector directly to your small table saw, planer, or jointer's 4" dust collection port. If you do so with 10' of 4" flex line, you will be pretty depressed rather quickly, as that is likely adding around 4" of static pressure to your system, and this is only capable of 2.9". So at this point, you will have no CFM produced. As the articles above explain, you really need to stay at least above 300 CFM to get any reasonable assurance of proper dust collection, and the more the better (to a higher limit that, if you're looking at this product, i'm sure you won't ever hit!).You could get away with 5' of 4" flex line, or 10-15' of 4" hard pipe and still be in the operating margins of this machine. HOWEVER, as you'll see in the real tests performed in the PDF linked above, you will have FAR BELOW the CFM required to suck dust and wood chips/shavings. This means it's useless, and you generally threw your $200 in the trash. My point here is that this machine is really underpowered and won't do anyone much good. I would suggest saving up an extra 100-200 and finding a machine with 9"+ of static pressure and 1000+ CFM, at least you stand a chance at that point after adding ducting.Grizzly is a fine brand to purchase, just get a bigger one. This was also missing some hardware required for the unit when i ordered it, which additionally prompted my return.---My bonus information for you:* You REALLY want a 2-stage dust collector. This is one stage, as are just about any you'll find below $500. I recommend purchasing something like this trash can cyclone lid, and a trash can, and turning your dust collection into a 2 stage. It's cheap, will make your life easier, and will improve your dust collector's performance with filtering in the end: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000223XY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (it adds 3-4" of static pressure to your system, be warned!).* You will want a quick disconnect to quickly move your flex hose from machine to machine. This is a good option: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000DD23N/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1* Most flex hose you buy is going to have a ground wire run in it, it's best to ground it to your machine at least on one end, if not both. Don't get crazy if you don't, any small shop should really have no issues with it: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B005VRVGUA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1* If you are splicing flex hose runs together, use this or similar: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000223YH/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1* Don't forget your hose clamps: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B001DDY6HG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1* Hard pipe adds far less resistence to your system than flex. If you can buy hard PVC, do it.* Dropping down below 4" REALLY hurts your CFM, try to do it never, or as little / short of runs as possible.* This is a good example of one for a small shop that might actually work, and they are regularly available on craigslist for $200-250 used or mostly new. https://smile.amazon.com/SHOP-W1685-1-5-Horsepower-Dust-Collector/dp/B001R23SS6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1473195302&sr=8-3&keywords=shop+fox - it's got a 6" port, or 2 4" if you use the splitter they give you. It pulls 11A when running, so make sure you have at least a couple different circuits available so you don't trip your breaker when you are using this and your table saw together.Any other questions, feel free to comment. Hope this helps.
