Measuring 18" in length and 1" in diameter, this is a solid threaded steel rod. Profile spacing is square with the expected finish for this price point, which is rough. A light lube is needed for a smoother ride, it doesn't spin easily with dry threads, it's a heavy piece. I use Super Lube synthetic lube for general purpose items, it's very good. I assume it will eventually bond with the wood dust. If you've wasted your time breaking the sharp edges of the thread, it makes feeding easier, but lube will do. For use as a bench leg vise, you can use a large supply to create your vision. 2x8 or 2x10 will fit perfectly as this screw is strong. My bench has 4x4 legs. The 1.250 straight through hole in the stem was ideal. I attached the nut and front shaft (6) with #16X 1-1.5 countersunk screws. The Y18SS is an excellent vise, simple, inexpensive, easy to set up for many applications and offers tremendous clamping force as a leg vise. Keep creating!
