Kickstart kits are easy to install and very effective. I had an air conditioner with a starting current of 31A. I put in a TO-5 kickstart and the starting current dropped to 8A. Right: from 31A to 8A. The TO-5 has the starting current almost to 1/4. I'm a believer. I installed kickstarts on all three air conditioners. Less start-up current and faster start-up reduces the compressor's start-up heat. This is also helpful as I have a Generac home alternator that cannot supply as many amps as my electric company. There are many misconceptions about what a start/run capacitor does. Some people claim that like a battery, it stores energy and provides it for starting. That's a lie. This is alternating current with a frequency of 60 Hz; You cannot save AC. The purpose of the start/run capacitor is to phase shift the current supplied to the bias armature windings which provide the torque to rotate the armature. Kickstart significantly increases capacitance (and phase shift) during the kickstart period. As soon as the compressor picks up speed, the kickstart relay disconnects it from the circuit.
