My computer crashed and Nit thought they wanted $7 a month so I could download and use their software which I already bought and paid for. NO WAY EVERYONE STAY OUT NEET so I bought this Plustek PS186. I bought a refurbished one. It had no diskettes, no instructions, no calibration paper, which they say is necessary, but I didn't. I found the company's website and downloaded their software. (Free, unlike Neet) Had a lot of trouble getting it to work because they have so many download options and it doesn't tell you which ones you need, what order they need to be run in or whatever. The download speed was also very slow. I ended up getting it working and am very happy with the performance so far. I need a document scanner Almost everything is black and white. Presets can be easily changed to your liking. You can set a specific scan folder, scan file type and resolution (100-600), etc. for each profile. This works great for me. Tried on color documents the results weren't very good, lots of lines even at a low resolution of 600dpi. For black and white documents this is great and fast. Since this is what I need most, I am happy with my purchase. You can also easily set or change a profile to remove blank pages, auto-rotate, enhance characters, etc. Unless you're very computer savvy, stick with a brand new profile that includes drives (I didn't know mine was that would come without a floppy disk). It probably should give it fewer stars, but it has some nice advantages: it's fairly compact when folded, and the hinged cover keeps dust out of the scanner, a major drawback of most other scanners. The document feeder has high side guides to keep the paper straight, it's almost vertical to make efficient use of gravity, and I've never had a paper jam. (Day 1) Before the day was done, I had the ultimate test: 100+ pages of double-sided 3-hole transcript. I did this in two files, about half each. Flawless and so easy. Click Scan. (I had preset 1 for a multi-page PDF document at 300 dpi to send to the "Scanned Documents" folder on my desktop.) I originally posted 4 because I was very annoyed at the lack of a disc , but I decided to give 5 stars because I bought a refurbished one, so I blame myself. I saved money for this hassle and I don't think I should blame the seller. i love the product
