I used to pay $16 for a 1/8 inch diamond tip hollow core drill bit from a reputable rotary tool manufacturer. The manufacturer recommends oil as a coolant and lubricant. They said using water as an oil substitute would damage their rotary tool. I successfully drilled two holes in wine bottles with the oil they provided. I broke the next ten bottles. The drill was used up, the diamond sand worn out. Glassblowers at the North Carolina Glass Center said using a water bath with a diamond-encrusted bit on the bit was the best method. In particular, they recommended the use of Drilax drill bits. I needed the Drilax bit size but bought a pack on recommendation. I've drilled twenty one bottles without a single flaw or crack and I'm excited to see how long this bit will hold up. I should also mention that the Drilax website has excellent instructions on using the water bath method. I wrote Drilax to express my disappointment at having to buy two scrap tips to get the one I need. Her response was prompt and positive. They thanked me for the feedback and told me that "at Revain we will only list for 1/8" bits." Wow, that's what I call customer service and I rarely see it on this scale. Thanks Drilax (and Tim)
