Review on Black Pro Series Rambler Hitch Cargo Carrier for 1-1/4” Receivers - 63155 by Cody Clark

Revainrating 5 out of 5

A very well designed stretcher lived up to expectations and I'm picky!

After reading many positive reviews and understanding how this carrier works, I realized this is exactly what we need to increase the carrying capacity of our Accord to carry our daughter's stuff for her freshman year of college to wear. Travel 1560 miles from California to Ohio. We loaded the media about halfway as it was enough. I have read some negative reviews and as an engineer familiar with carriers this carrier is well designed. I bought a premium type hitch, so the max load according to the instructions is 300lbs. The maximum load on the Accord hitch is approximately 200 pounds. The carrier weighs about 35 pounds, so the maximum load is 165 pounds of cargo. The only way to bend the brace, as mentioned in one review, is by seriously overloading the trunk and/or actively driving on a very bumpy or bumpy dirt road. Driving on paved roads or highways will not cause any damage. I didn't turn on the auxiliary lighting as the license plate and brake/taillights were fully visible with the charge at the rear. The reflective tape added some visibility at night. To keep the hot exhaust from affecting the cargo bag and its contents I came up with a tricky scheme where I took the dryer vent and sprayed it against the exhaust pipe as the chrome tip on the Accord won't remove and allows others. more elegant method. See attached photo for assembly method. The end of the vent directs the copious amounts of exhaust fumes escaping at highway speeds down and away from the trunk. We installed a StowAway hitch tensioner that eliminates side-to-side movement and hitch rattle in the receiver. when moving. We also used the Wallaroo Cargo Bag which has worked brilliantly. At the destination we disassembled the boot and put the halves together because when it arrived it fit into the rear of the Accord's roomy boot, leaving plenty of room for our few bags on the way back.

Pros
  • Easy installation
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
