Review on High-Speed USB 2.0 7-Port Economy Hub - Optimize Your Device Connectivity by Brady Shayotovich

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Hub is poorly designed and overheats

Thanks to some of the other reviewers for pointing out that the problem with this model is probably the device overheating and then shutting down. Take a look at the case: there isn't a single vent hole or way to dissipate heat from the case. It's made of soft plastic that doesn't conduct heat well. Something should come out of the top USB stick ports for the keys as mine actually do feel a little hot when removed from there. Based on the top secret fact (unknown to electronics designers or architects) that heat rises, I drilled a 1mm hole in the top of the case. Now it doesn't overheat or turn off spontaneously. Note that when my desktop computer goes to sleep (hibernation) mode, the hub sometimes disappears and needs to be unplugged and plugged back in. The -saver mode always connects to the system at the last minute and rarely works properly anyway, so who knows? I've seen direct attached USB devices behave the same way, since not everyone implements USB in exactly the same way. So try it. YMMV. This can save you a trip back to the store to buy a new one. (Although once you've drilled a hole in it, you probably can't take it back ;-). Perhaps Belkin engineers will look into this "heating" technology and consider venting in future versions.

Pros
  • Great for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Slightly torn
