Review on ๐Ÿ“ท The Ultimate Telephoto Zoom Lens for Sony Alpha A-Mount Digital SLR Cameras by Brent Gurney

Long, heavy and sharp

This is for T* mount, Opteka 650-1300mm lens with 2x converter. Only limited usable, but. The weight and size make this lens very difficult to handle. A tripod mount is sufficient to hold an object, but at this distance from the mount it has such a large mass that the lens has enormous angular momentum; it will rotate and loosen or overtighten the retainer unless extreme care is used. This setting makes it extremely unlikely that you will ever successfully fire at a moving or moving target. Given the long focal length and relatively small aperture, the lens' depth of field is VERY shallow, making it difficult to focus without a good viewfinder. I wouldn't even consider using this on an LED screen. Zooming is an amateur trick: the lens simply extends. There's a locking screw to keep it in place, but it takes so much effort to enlarge the lens once it's unlocked that you might crack the locking mechanism without realizing it. It feels like you could easily spread the front and back of the lens if you're not careful. All this to say that my limited use shows that the optics are better than I expected in terms of chromatic aberration, vignetting and distortion. The color saturation is good. The lens is powerful and I suspect I'll be using it at the minimum focal length in the vast majority of cases. I also suspect that I will never be able to use the 2x converter. I'm using this with a Sony Alpha 580. I'll be using this in several of the nature areas I visit where I'll take a full tripod (or monopod due to the overall weight) and set it up in good spots for long, patient shots. . I'm not going to rush into this. The cart is heavy and bulky. If I were to do it again, I'd probably rather consider a shorter, lighter lens.
