Review on Tulip TP1166 Etimo Crochet Hook Set: Your Ultimate Crocheting Companion by Michelle Langley

Almost Perfect: Tulip Etimo vs. Clover Amour (and more)

This is a great set and I love both the clutch that holds the hooks and the scissors that come with it. (I already had hooked tapestry needles, so I didn't use the needles from this set. I haven't used a ruler yet.) You might get more bang for your buck if you order the Clover Amour connected set. below because it contains 10 hooks but you only get hooks. This set includes eight crochet hooks, plus a storage bag that has room for two extra crochet hooks, plus scissors and tapestry hooks; everything is at hand. This Tulip Etimo set is a steal, especially if you've been keeping an eye on prices for a while and catch a set when it's cheapest. PROS: Why Tulip is better than Clover When it comes to comfort, Tulip Etimo hooks are without a doubt the best hooks I have. Second hand. They are more comfortable than Clover Amour hooks (and the usual ergonomic ones) and regular aluminum hooks (like Boye and Curtzy). While the Clover Amour grip is flat where the thumb rests, the Tulip Etimo grip is more rounded. This means that when turning the hook to create stitches, the edge of the Amour grip will rub against the finger and cause pain, just like traditional hooks, while the Tulip Etimo grip does not. In addition, the surface of the Etimo hooks is even smoother than that of the Amour hooks, so the barb yarn moves more smoothly and squeaks less. (Although the smoothest finish I find is Curtzy crochet hooks.) Crocheting with Etimo is a dream. Mistake: Clover displacing Tulip Unfortunately, Etimo hooks are not as deep as Amour hooks. This means that the yarn sometimes slips off the hook during complex maneuvers, such as when I connect granny squares using the join-as-you-go method. Actually, this is Amour's only advantage over Etimo, and in my opinion it's not that important. I still prefer the Etimo hook, even if it means spending a few extra seconds trying to thread one loop through another. I will say that for small hooks, the shank and handle of the Amour hook are longer than those of the corresponding Etimo hook. This applies to hooks B/1-2.25mm (not in this set), C/2-2.75mm (not in this set), D/3-3.25mm and E/4-3.5 mm. If you hit the bigger hooks, everything will even out. CONCLUSION: I highly recommend Tulip Etimo Hooks. The Clover Amour hooks are very good, but the Tulip Etimo hooks are better in my opinion. Although it costs more to purchase these hooks individually, I would recommend purchasing one to try before purchasing this set. It's worth it even if you get extra hooks. I bought the G and H hooks first to take along for a test ride as those were the hooks I used most at the time. I do not regret it. Grab Hook I (5.5mm) here.
