Does not filter. The water flow is not restricted as when buying the whole device! I believe the adhesive holding it loosens in the Amazon warehouse and loosens in transit. The water does not penetrate through the filter material into the interior!. This is my second. The first one that came with the device lasted a month! ****UPDATE**** May 2019. I've been using them for about 5 months now and have already bought 4 filters. Plus the ones that came with a faucet! Average 1 filter per month! So some of them last a lot longer than others, from 2-3 weeks to my last one which lasted about a month! Those that last longer have a very strong water flow in the beginning. That's why it seems to me that they don't filter, but they end up slowing down like the others! I've raised my rating from 1 to 4 stars because overall it's better than carrying 3 gallons of water home from the grocery store every week! Some things that still bother me are that you have to run the water through the filter for about 5 minutes in the beginning (how many gallons does that waste?) because the water feels very soapy/oily on my hands. It takes a few minutes to figure it out! I have no idea what it is but the box says to work at least 10 minutes before use! Overall not a bad product! I ended up having to buy a metal faucet adapter as well because the plastic adapter kept slipping out in the box! ***SIZE LOOK ON THE PHOTO***
