The gate is strong when properly installed. Due to the gate's minimal installation height from the ground, I had to remove a small portion of the base to install the lower portion of the hinge. Opening and closing the gate with one hand requires some practice due to the bottom latch. I found it easier to first attach the bottom latch at a slight angle and then snap the top latch in place. However, it is very durable after locking. The piece of metal that keeps the gate from swinging over the stairs could have been better designed. It only starts to vibrate at around 45 degrees and leaves enough room to slip. This is a good gate that I believe won't open the little one at all and won't let him/her fall if he/she leans against it. Cats are more likely to squeeze under it, and a 5ft 10in adult can easily step over it without opening.
