The gate is strong when properly installed. Due to the gate's minimal installation height from the ground, I had to remove a small portion of the base to install the lower portion of the hinge. Opening and closing the gate with one hand requires some practice due to the bottom latch. I found it easier to first attach the bottom latch at a slight angle and then snap the top latch in place. Good idea, but requires a lot of work. In general, it's very cheaply made. The wood is relatively thin. The gate had splinters both at the top and bottom where the spindles made contact with the handrails. The quality of the wood used made me doubt its ability to withstand the pressure of a child pushing the gate when one of the hooks is not fully engaged. I installed this gate at the top of my sleeping stairs with my little granddaughter. I left the previous gate because it was possible to trip over it. There is no risk of stumbling with this door thanks to the fixed crossbeam at the bottom, but some minor carpentry work was necessary for the installation.
