I installed this gate at the top of my sleeping stairs with my little granddaughter. I left the previous gate because it was possible to trip over it. There is no risk of stumbling with this door thanks to the fixed crossbeam at the bottom, but some minor carpentry work was necessary for the installation. The door already has a wood mounting surface on each side, but the stairs could be a bit trickier. (Please see my photos to see what I mean.) Step 1 was to screw a long 2.5" wide piece of wood to the flat sections at the top and bottom of the Newel rack, 2 screws each .(A length of 1x2 or 1x3 will work.) To avoid cracking the wood, pre-drill holes for the screws.I could attach the brackets directly to the stud, but if I'm wrong it's a lot easier to replace a damaged board than an existing ladder bolt.Step 2: I installed the brackets and installed a gate that rotates on the brackets. The gate can easily be removed and stored elsewhere when we don't need it.It's a little tricky to remove the top and Align bottom to put back in place, but will get easier over time, especially with a different pair of hands.(If I can do it on my own, so can you!) Next Step 3: I have the opposite side for the lock measured. Of course, where the gate met the drywall at a 90 degree angle, there wasn't a properly placed wall stud, so I had to find enough studs to securely install the pre-painted horizontal plate that holds the transom. To the baseboard I attached a triangular piece high enough to accommodate the eyebolt that attaches the bottom hook to the wall. It was all relatively easy for me, but I think even a beginner can handle it. Although the product page strongly states that it's good for stairs, I don't remember the installation instructions for stairs, so I had to improvise. Even with the stair gate in place, I prefer to add a removable gate to the bedroom door as a backup as I expect my girlfriend will be making enough noise to wake me up if she tries to get out. Of course, an alternative to stair gates is to install enough door gates to keep your child out of the way of the stairs. It's a fact that toddlers are attracted to stairs. They're hard to keep when they're determined. My 17 month old grandson now loves rock climbing and throws himself up the stairs at every opportunity. I taught all three of my children how to walk up and down from an early age. You need practice to climb safely. My granddaughter is now 3 years old. 4 months old and she climbs and mounts safely on her own. Finally, I can also recommend a product like the link below if you have a raw wood staircase. (The set I bought doesn't appear to be available right now.) My daughter has one too. They are easy to use and offer significant security for people of all ages at a low price. This grandma feels more confident on stairs with little grip. To be honest, I find carpeted stairs more slippery, especially at the front edge of each step. (Sorry I don't have any rug or rug advice.) If you look closely at my photos you can see my top traction lane under my gate location. Not invisible, but not an eyesore either. Good luck creating your own gateland. Pretty bad time, but it doesn't last too long and you quickly get used to climbing over solid gates. :)
