I bought this infrared thermometer to monitor the temperature of my 28 inch black stone pan. When I first opened it up, I pointed it at a few random objects around the house (countertop, painting, cat, etc.) to see how well it worked. Most of what I pointed out was reading at room temperature, with the exception of my cat, which was around 72 degrees. I found this odd, but assumed it was just a surface temperature reading. Then I went outside and checked the grill. It was about 45 degrees outside and the grill read in that range. Now it's time for the real test. I fired up the grill, set it on low and checked the temp after about 5 minutes. According to the thermometer, my grill has already heated up to 525-600 degrees. This was very inaccurate as my grill was only on and on low for a very short time (I could still lightly touch the top of the grill with my hand). I gave the product the benefit of the doubt that the outside temperature was causing inaccurate readings, waited and tried again the next day. However, with outside temperatures closer to 70C, it showed 500-600 almost immediately after turning on the grill. If I'm buying it for culinary use, I wouldn't recommend it.
