Review on πŸ–₯️ Tripp Lite Dual Monitor DVI KVM Switch with Audio, USB Hub & Cables: Ultimate Control for Two Monitors (B004-2DUA2-K) by Dan Barrett

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Works great once it works - update!

Where do I start? I used to work in IT so let's just say I'm not new to computer technology. I work from home with my employer's Windows based HP laptop and a tarsus universal docking computer which is hardware/software limited and I also have a minimac for my personal hardware in my own office. I use two monitors for both setups. I wanted KVM to make it easier to switch when I wanted to use my stuff and not when I'm working, which employer setup requires. I've narrowed my choices down to Aten (CS1642A) and Trip-Lite (B004-2DUA2-K). After reading reviews that Tripp-Lite's technical support is second to none, I decided on the Trip-Lite Dual Port Dual Display. Even though I have Revain Prime, it took a week to ship. I thought the installation would take about 30 minutes. After 2 hours it was still not working properly. The KVM turns on and off with a corresponding beep every 2 seconds. I finally managed to isolate the USB mouse power supply. I've gone through 5 different USB mice/mice. I figured well that while I can live with a mouse in any computer, let's get the rest working. I could then get an ad for each running machine, but not the second. After speaking to tech support, I learned from them that the DVI cables that came with my monitors where DVI-I and KVM require the analog version of DVI-D. Of course, this isn't an intermediate manual or website as a necessary accessory, and a cable to the monitors doesn't come with the KVM. Two days after the arrival of the DVI-D cables, the second display works. Just not my mouse (same reboot issue) and one of my keyboards (Mac only likes one - Windows laptop wasn't picky). I tried using hotkeys as instructed by tech support to factory reset KVM to see if a USB mouse would be required. Interesting note: I was able to get a Logitech wireless USB mouse (borrowed from my wife's laptop) to work, but not a wired Logitech USB optical mouse <sigh>. Tech support was about to send me a new device but the solution was resolved. that a new device would repeat the same problem and said that I would probably just have to go for a USB wireless mouse. After we hung up, trying to decide if I should return the Revain device and try Aten, I cycled the device, fiddled with the factory reset buttons again, then tried turning the device on by I held down the third button. a button on the KVM (mode) button that looked like it had gone into some sort of factory mode. when I unplugged it and plugged it back in - everything works as it should now - fingers crossed. The machines restarted and shut down several times without hiccups, and the transition went smoothly. Don't ask me how and why it works now, but it works. I'll update this post when bad luck returns in the morning. I use it daily and it has been flawless! Worth upgrading to 5 stars!

Pros
  • Additional console audio jacks are conveniently located on the front of the KVM switch making it ideal for use with IP phones
Cons
  • Reliability
