I installed four of these on hydraulic radiators in the house I was built in in the 1900's. I'm pretty sure the radiator valves were original and didn't work at all. . I took a chance and installed them without removing the original hub from the radiator. Three out of four hooked up correctly, no leaks. The fourth had the smallest leak (like a drip every four hours) and I had to fiddle with that one to fix it. Adjustable radiator valves changed the performance of my heating system and eliminated a huge up and down temperature imbalance. Yes, if you've never done this it can be intimidating and you'll need some good pipe wrenches and a piece of pipe to get the proper leverage, but those old valves came off with no harm and I didn't need them. heat the joints with a burner. Just apply gentle and even pressure.
