Good for buffing and cleaning parts
I mainly use them for buffing paint on scale models. They have enough material around the shaft and I can polish the corners without touching the metal shaft with painted parts. I'm sure they can be used for fine polishing other items and materials. Even when buffing a soft surface like hobby paint, I didn't see any scratches or swirls.
