Why these locks don't work in cold weather.

We've been told that cold weather shouldn't bother these locks. We installed 20 of these in homes in Illinois last November. This week 4 of them refused to work leaving the tenants out in the cold. We are very upset at this moment. We changed the batteries even though they are new and that didn't seem to help. Remember to lubricate the mechanism. Any help is appreciated. We called Schlage and they want to send them pictures of the internal instruction code and then they will replace them. We don't think that's a good idea.
