Very impressed with auto and vehicle electronics

Today is my first day on the road with this device so that's all I can talk about; I'll post an update if anything changes later. Installation was a breeze. The hardest part was getting through the firewall, but the cable had a very good grommet. I pulled out the grille to make the mount as perfect as possible and it wasn't difficult at all. I routed a string along the hood latch cable and discreetly secured it in place. It was very easy in the car. The CPU doesn't take up much space, so you can mount or tether it where it works best. I attached a small speaker to the underside of the knee brace with my left foot - believe me, it's loud enough down there that you don't have to raise it to your head. The screen is taped to the ignition and all the wires have almost collapsed. I haven't installed the LED yet because I haven't decided where I need it yet, but obviously you just drill a tiny hole and stick it right in there. Total effort was about two hours and average skill level; This is a project for those with experience in car electronics and not necessarily ideal for DIYers. The kit comes with good installation instructions. As for performance: the functionality is really impressive; It has an almost endless list of programmable features, so you can really customize how this device works to your liking if you're specific. Operation is simple; It's all in the user guide, which is pretty easy to follow. Basic operations with factory settings are totally intuitive, just like using a device installed on the dashboard. The warnings are pretty basic too. The performance so far is excellent; Today was my first day on the freeway so I can only speak of 50 miles interstate and 10 minutes in urban areas. Off the highway I didn't get any warnings at all, which seems right given that I'm driving in the country - I've driven through at least one store with automatic doors and haven't received any false warnings, even in highway mode. On the Autobahn, I kept getting confirmed warnings; My best warning gave me a five minute warning before I saw two officers (one with the radar on and the other with someone pulled over). I am very impressed so far. UPDATE 09/16/2016: I'm still very happy with this detector. It provides good early warning for the Ka band; However, the K-band generates so many false alarms that I had to disable the K-band entirely (it's an option in the settings). It's not the manufacturer's fault - it's a reaction to the latest cars, the worst of which are Audi, Escalade and Porsche. These marks tend to disable the detector. Another issue I've encountered is that it sometimes gives false warnings about technical issues when first turning it on. It gives five or six warnings in a row and asks me to check the connections, but all connections are fine. If I turn it off and on again, the problem goes away. So I can't point the finger at Whistler for being sensitive to different cars because it's just a reflection of the changes in modern car technology. I'm a little frustrated with the technical warning issue as I think it could be a harbinger of more serious issues, so I'll have to monitor very closely and provide another update if/when things change. UPDATE 10/25/2016: I found out that the technical warnings are caused by undervoltage at startup. In particular, due to the fact that after starting the engine, the voltage drops slightly, the detector thinks that something is wrong. So I switched the power supply to a constant 12V source and started turning the unit on manually with the power button and the problem went away completely. This is still normal as the device can be set to turn off automatically after a preselected time. Overall I am very happy with the performance of this detector, especially for the reasonable price.
