I was having trouble with the hand pump on my mountain bike, a throbbing sensation that was causing discomfort. Many pens have all sorts of patterns and padding/pillow counts. The problem is that I have small hands, so grips like Oury, which are very comfortable by the way, were too big for me. it didn't matter and thicker where it mattered. This meant the grips were even smaller so I could wrap my hand and fingers around them for better control, but the pad was right where I needed it. They work very well in all conditions. Finding grips that work well when dry isn't easy, and when wet and covered in mud these grips hold up strong.
