This works well for me with a 'factory'/fresh calibration to measure paint thickness on my cars. All of these measurements are in the 5 mil (0.005 inch/125 micron) range and this device appears to be fairly repeatable for these measurements, allowing you to detect a thin spot or swept/taped area with reasonable confidence. I haven't had much success sizing for different thicknesses, but I didn't bother to work really hard. What I noticed is that the measurements for the 5 mil test film were quite similar, they were significantly different for thicker ones So I'm assuming you'll need to recalibrate if you want to use this for that. I'm happy with this for my home compounding/polishing needs.
