Better with upgraded coax

Overall I'm pleased with the results of this signal booster, but I had reasonable expectations. Our home is less than a mile from three AT&T towers, but we are just behind the ridge line, which makes us appear to be in the shadow of the sidewalk. Before the signal booster, we had a constant 0-1 bar indoors on the ground floor (better as soon as you go outside). With an outdoor directional antenna mounted above the roof, about 10 m above the ground, the signal booster rose to 2 bar in most of the ground floor and 1 bar everywhere else. I wasn't expecting the full 4 bars from my near-zero starting point - the main goal was to avoid dropped calls and missed calls. The 50 foot (15 m) coax cable that comes with the amplifier is only RG-58 class, which does not have very good signal loss performance in the 700MHz to 1.9GHz range. I upgraded the coax cable (and installed a polyphaser lightning rod) with a shorter length of the Times Microwave LMR-400 (which is about twice the diameter of the coax cable that came with the unit). This resulted in a significant improvement and now I get 2-3 bars in the room where the signal booster room antenna is and 2 bars everywhere else. You could invest in an even better quality coaxial cable like the Andrews Wireline. Just make sure it's 50 ohms and has the right connections.

Pros
  • Very impressive
Cons
  • boring packaging
