I was able to make this work for what I used it for, which is to stretch handmade fabric over a frame so I could eventually frame it as a work of art. HOWEVER these are NOT real stretcher bars for serious pictures. They split and split very easily so you can't press on them too hard. And the rest of the reviews are correct, there are NO instructions. BUT the steps are on the Amazon product page. So yes, they might work for some DIY projects, but you need an actual stretcher bar kit to make art canvases for painting. I really liked the included outboard hardware.
