First of all, yes I bought one in 2018; Yes, I know there are better options. I had to buy a new motherboard and processor, but I already had 16GB of DDR3 memory and didn't want to buy new RAM. So I decided on it and ASRock 970A-G/3.1. This processor can certainly hold its own in today's games. Other reviewers have mentioned that it gets very hot or that it's on par with a fusion reactor in terms of its heat output. You are not wrong. It absolutely needs a water cooler - I have a MasterLiquid Lite 120 which runs fine at stock speeds. I noticed that the ASRock board is set to the stock voltage of 1.5375V in the BIOS, which I think runs SUPER hot and causes stuttering and crashes in games. I lowered it to 1.4250V and the stuttering is gone and the heat, while present, is much more manageable. I managed to overclock a bit but it wasn't stable. It might be my budget water cooler, or maybe I haven't found the right place yet. If you're on a budget and can opt for newer parts, go this route - it's not a very efficient processor (220W). Of course!). However, I got it cheap and managed to get it working the way I want it to and I'm very happy.
