I like them because they are quite thin and made out of a single piece of wood. I don't recognize the species claimed, but they are white, like Baltic birch, but stronger and tougher.>. They take paint well, there are some issues with open grain, but almost any grain filler will help smooth out the wood if needed. They're smooth, not like glass, but for the most part, you don't need to get sandpaper out. The color lays fairly evenly and the wood accepts both water and oil based paints. I didn't try to paint or color them. Very little graininess is visible, but some is obvious, just not obvious.>. The edges are brown and appear to have been heated, but this does not affect flat surfaces and the edges can also be painted over.>. Once finished and sealed (polyacrylic), they are stable even in bright sunshine (sunlight through a window, daily for several weeks). I've had toddlers, school age, teens and adults take them, test them, return some and buy others, they really last. I like it.
