I have a main run of wire in my basement from the electrical box to my workshop, it's nearly 50 feet long. Instead of nailing each 12/2 wire to the side joists with a bunch of nailing staples, I nailed about 20 of them evenly spaced and stacked the wires on top of each other. This made installation much easier (and quicker) than using clamps or any other method of attaching wires to joists. Required by code so you don't have to measure where you run the wires. However, cable retainers do not hold the wire securely (do not allow movement) so you still need to staple the cable before and after twisting, splicing and packaging to secure the wire. The wire stays in the stapler but can be moved back and forth without much resistance. I have enough cable left over to run some Category 5 cable along the opposite joist. Stackers can handle almost any wire the thickness of a telephone cord.
