Review on Magnetic Travel Chess Set by Yellow Mountain Imports: Perfect Portable Entertainment on the Go! by Jeff Ross

I love it and would buy it again.

Sweet chess. I bought these for my kid as a set for travel and school lunch. After 7 months of moderate use (a few hours a week) it's holding up well. It does what it's supposed to do: it's a small but playable, low-cost chess game with coordinates that travel and cause no grief if lost, destroyed, or stolen. The magnets are strong enough to prevent parts from falling off with a little shaking or moving, but they don't quite stick to the board. A small note: although the kit was always securely packaged when not in use, the sheet metal in the center of the circuit board came loose a little and formed a slight bulge that is not easily smoothed out. I think there may have been too many peasant fights on the central squares! Although the deformation isn't entirely aesthetic, it doesn't interfere with the gameplay. I recommend you keep the parts in a zippered bag. My kid suggests taking two extra queens ;) - would be perfect! Sometimes he also uses it as an analytical board. I would buy it again.

Pros
  • Standing test results
Cons
  • Basically everything is fine, but...
