Insert hose anti-clockwise!

The hose will look too big (it's bigger, but it fits) and frayed ends will drive you crazy. The answer is that the hose is screwed in counter-clockwise! Frayed ends or not, you can also get in with an intact woven nylon jacket. Just make sure the hose end is cut absolutely straight and fully seated on the end of the long nut, right where the threads for the actual fitting begin. Shouldn't leak at all if you do it right.
