Very easy and cheap replacement item, very important part of the engine, most people don't understand this but let me explain why. The engine is essentially an air pump and if the intake air is reduced due to a dirty filter you will have less power as the engine processor maintains an air/fuel ratio (14.7:1) which is detected by the airflow sensor before it goes to the engine. You won't notice a loss of power over time as it's gradual, but when you install a new filter you'll immediately feel the difference in torque depending on how dirty it was. The new air filter allows more cooler air into the engine, which cools the engine better and lowers the combustion temperature, colder, denser air produces more power. A dirty filter can also cause the engine to burn more oil by drawing oil vapor from the crankcase into the engine through the higher vacuum due to the dirty air filter. It is part of the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system to reduce blow-by emissions.
