so I bought it thinking I could use it to play Blu-ray movies on my laptop. I figured you'd need additional software for this (I recommend VLC if you're a bit tech-savvy - it's free), but I was hoping to get a compact reader that would easily fit in my laptop bag. To be fair, he plays them, but only if they're in perfect shape. Any defects will cause it to freeze for a long time, and the disc will become unusable for viewing. Using the same drive in my Xbox caused no problems. I can't comment on the ability to write or read data as I don't need it. It's lightweight and comes with an AC adapter and a dual USB port that can power your laptop, but if you're looking for a Blu-ray player, look elsewhere.
