Review on WoodRiver #5 Bench Plane, V3 by Chris Jenkins

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Took a bit too much work to get it working for the price

As purchased, the throat of this plane was too narrow to allow clearance for a shaving to pass through. In order to produce any shavings or do anything except chatter across the top of a board, I had to take a mill file to the throat and widen it by a fraction of a millimeter. Once modified in this fashion, the plane works reasonably well, and produces thin shavings. However, while I accept that it is normal to have to do some adjustment of a new plane to get it working in tip top shape, for a $130 plane, I don't think having to do that kind of work to get it to function at all is acceptable. I personally will be very leary of buying another Woodriver plane.

Pros
  • Versatile use on both rough and finished woods
Cons
  • Can leave tracks or grooves on the surface when not used correctly.
