As a fan of Wurkko's flashlights like the WK20 and WK30, I tried the DL40 dive light. I like dive lights because they are practically guaranteed to be waterproof in the event of rain, falling into a pool, etc., while other "waterproof" lights may only be waterproof. It's a big light, a good solid *big* light! Requires a pair of 26650s for a large (many, many) runtime. Each cell is rated at 5000mAh which is consistent with what my opus says. Also, the extra weight allows for good heat dissipation and won't turn into a curling iron if you leave it on turbo for too long. Underwater (like diving) you're talking about a fairly large number of gallons of active cooling. However, the box that was delivered was a nice cardboard box with a closable lid covered in white foam. Inside was a flashlight with cells inside, a strap, a dual-bay charger and USB cable, extra O-rings and adapter tubes in case you wanted to use the 18650 in a pinch, and a multilingual instruction manual. Everything was fine with you then. The first impression is pretty good. Processing and finishing are impeccable as usual. There are no sharp corners, edges or points anywhere. The anodizing is a pristine semi-gloss black. Unlike other Sofirn/Wurkkos dive lights with smooth battery tubes, the DL40 has large rectangular "tracks" for extra grip. Given the thick, rubber-coated rope, you're unlikely to lose traction on the light, but the marks are still there. The caseback has a nice wide lanyard slot, "although you'll need some sort of tool to push it through (toothpick to push through, thread/wire to pull out, etc.). Four LH351D LEDs provide light output. , a beautiful neutral 5000K creamy white perfection, the same LED that powers the WK30 and similar lamps. Each LED in its reflector has the shape of a "petal" in the outer beam (scatter), but the hot spot is perfectly round. There's a slight yellow tinge to the crown, but that's nothing to complain about, and in fact it's not even that noticeable unless you're hunting behind a white wall. It has 4 levels: low/medium/high/turbo. The instructions say it's 300/820/2000/5000lm and I have no reason to doubt it. The turbo lights up the room by bouncing off the ceiling like room lights and more. Instead of the annoying transient dip that many lamps have, the DL40 has built-in temperature control that only reduces the LED current when the measured temperature is too high. The interface is very simple: click , click a few more times to switch modes, and long-press to turn it off. No flicker, no secret modes, no nonsense, just simplicity. Mode memory means next time it is powered on it will be in the same mode as it was last powered off. When you're underwater you certainly don't want to flash yourself or anything, so this UI is perfect. The push button magnetic switch is *not* a through hole, so there's no chance of seawater or water getting in there. . The back cover and the head are connected to the battery tube with double O-rings, this way hardly any water can enter the flashlight. If the front panel is removable at all I haven't been able to, so I trust it's adequately sealed. :D The light can be "blocked" by unscrewing the back cover a half turn to prevent parasitic drains from draining the cells. It may last a year or two, but if you're going to be leaving the lantern unattended for any length of time (winter?), it's still a good habit. The initial charging of the cells with the supplied charger is also extremely easy. Plug in the cells, plug into a USB charger or just a computer port and let things take their course. The indicators turn red while charging and turn green when complete. Negative? I can't think of any. A little battery rattle when you shake the flashlight hard is all, but it *is* a two-cell flashlight. So unlike many dive lights that only have one cell and limited run time, the DL40 needs to be powered by a pair of high powered 26650s. This is a good sized flashlight with a good grip and is not limited to diving. Anywhere you need a fully waterproof flashlight, the DL40 is a great option. I like it! :D
