I have a gas water heater that is vented by a 4 inch duct in the chimney that sometimes experiences a "downdraft" of cold air, causing the water heater exhaust gases to escape. The problem is that I have a radon fan that is already sucking ambient air out of the house and while it's on it tends to suck heavy cold outside air into the water heater chimney flue. Then when the water heater comes on, it blows hot exhaust air down into the basement. I set this up so that it shuts off the radon fan when it detects the air in the water heater's stack area is above about 80 degrees. You can set the hysteresis to 10 degrees. I'm only using the "heating" clamps, but you can turn on another "cooling" device. Works great! It's a bit "clunky" to program - with only a 7-segment display and 4 buttons, but it works. This device is much smaller than it looks. I was able to fit it into a deep electrical work box with the GFI switchplate on top (requiring a bit of switchplate adjustment). ATTENTION! Although the switch contacts are rated for 10A, do not insert thick solid wire (12 or 14 gauge) into the contacts. You break the screw terminals right on the internal circuit board. For stranded wires going into screw terminals, use wire nuts from your standard Romex 12 or 14 gauge solid wire. This achieves strain relief.
