My wife and I are not "hard core gamers" when it comes to board games. But the current pandemic is opening up new avenues of interest in interesting ways. Additionally, our interest in healthcare (and an impressive visual presentation) made it an obvious choice to add to our modest but growing collection. We will briefly review the game in three categories: Theme, Mechanics, and Difficulty. while minimizing or completely avoiding fatalities. What intrigued us both about the game was how closely many of the mechanics reflect details in the medical field. . The nomenclature they use in the guide for the game down to the actual departments was correct. It really felt like running a hospital. And the way they implemented the mechanisms we found was flawless in terms of healthcare immersion. MECHANICS: In general, the game is designed for 1-4 players. The game is played in 8 rounds (it seems long, but the rounds are actually very fast). According to the instructions, each round consists of 6 phases (admit patients, improve hospital, activate hospital, forget patients, discharge patients, change shift) that can make it difficult. HOWEVER, this is a bit misleading. In fact, we would say that it works in 3 phases, as the hospital activation, neglected patients, patient discharge phases naturally flow into each other and are quite easy to do. As a side note, the single player uses a unique "medical records" deck that gives you objectives. Also, for multiplayer, there's an additional deck of Event Cards to add more scenarios to react to (we recommend leaving Event Cards off until you've mastered the game). The game also advises that admin cards should be discarded when playing for the first time. Personally, we recommend that you keep these as they are not that difficult to implement and therefore you can get used to them quickly. Also, it's actually very easy to change the internal rules based on timing, clarity, or players' unique circumstances. The game world (we have Trekking the World, Bastion, Stuffed Fables, Pandemic, and more) this game took two passes to get a solid feel to it. On our first playthrough, we really had to take the time to understand exactly what needs to happen when, and relate to the many symbols used. We haven't even completed the full 8 laps yet. The second time we played we had 2 slow rounds but things started to work out quickly and it became natural that we got through the rest of the rounds. WHAT WE UNDERSTOOD was that the rules weren't complicated, but there were a lot more SIMPLE rules than we were used to before. So expect a slow start on the first or second lap. But things quickly become second nature, and you realize that the game was never particularly difficult to start with. in more players soon. This is a good game to introduce someone to the management game genre, and it has plenty of depth and variety to bring lots of fun and replayability.
