Review on Hawk Performance HB551F 748 Street Brake by Victor Ewing

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good pads. Bad sensors.

I have experience with various Hawk pads from my freeway days (on other cars). However, the HPS are performance outdoor pads, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I only drive daily (no more track time), sometimes vigorously. In the corners, I swapped everything for a 335i with a sports package - these pads don't make any noise. I applied a fair amount of anti-squeak paste to the back of the pads prior to installation, so make sure you do the same. However, still no squeaking. There is noticeably less initial bite/friction when braking with them. I always thought the original OEM friction was too aggressive anyway, so I actually think it's an improvement, but I need to re-accustom myself to the car a bit (by pressing the brake pedal harder than usual) - Since now I have to Press the brake pedal a little harder, I notice my pedal is a little softer than I ever thought before. You can always add stainless steel brake lines if that's a problem for you. I've noticed that the pads aren't as grippy when cold as they were after a few stops, especially compared to the OEM pads. It's winter now, so maybe summer isn't so bad. This is not a problem. only what you see. - Once you warm them up a bit, they have tremendous stopping power, much stronger than OEM pads (you may start flirting with ABS more often/earlier than expected). I didn't see any brake wear at high temperatures even with quite a lot of pressure, but I'm not on the track. I haven't had them long enough to appreciate the dustiness, but I expect it will be a lot. better than stock. Sensors: The front pads are equipped with two pad wear sensors. The E90 has one wear sensor in the front left corner and one in the back right corner. The sensor is inserted into a recess on the seal itself. Surprisingly, they don't match at all, despite the fact that the same company supplies both the sensor and the pad. The sensor basically just wants to fall out. I bent a small spring to try to make it as tight as possible, but in the end I assume the front one will fall out soon, and the back one I tossed, tied, and pulled to the side (so the computer warning disappears). ). I have half a brain (hopefully!) so I can tell when my brake pads are worn out without the computer alerting me, so I'm not worried about losing that 'feature'. I only mention this because it might mean more to other people. All in all these are excellent pads and I would happily buy them again. Functionally, they tend to be more sporty than OEM, but should also be significantly better when it comes to wheel dust.

Pros
  • Great for a small house
Cons
