Review on 🍷 Effortless Wine Opening with Ah-So Corkscrew: Two-Prong Cork Puller and Bottle Opener by Justin Quinones

Great ah-so opener, great price, but not the best opener...

Over 40 years ago, my boyfriend at the time gave us an ah-so style wine opener. This worked well and accommodated my obsessive preference for doing no harm, allowing the cork to be pulled out with little or no damage to the cork. I've been separated from this awful opener (and then SO) for 35 years and recently thought about trying another awful opener to see if it's as good as I remembered it being. Short answer: not quite as good as I remembered, and not as good as a regular winged corkscrew. because it was a good, low price. And it seems well made, there's nothing wrong with the design and construction of the opener itself. I know that the prongs of many of these openers do rust a little over time, spring steel (not stainless steel) is always a risk, especially if it gets regularly wet like a wine corkscrew does; our old one got a little rusty after a few years, maybe this new one will get a little rusty too, but certainly not now. However, using this Ah-So required more time, effort, and attention than I remembered. (We bought a stoppered bottle just to test this opener.) I'm sure I use it correctly and well, but while inserting it, she accidentally pushed the cork into the bottle neck to the point which I should have stopped opening and instead twist and lift the plug until the pins come out and then continue to insert the pins. It takes about 3 rounds to remove a cork. In the meantime, the top/outer rim of the cork will crumble a bit under all the stress and the resulting cork crumbs need to be removed from the neck of the bottle so they don't fall off when the cork is finally loosened. really worth it in my opinion. Better/faster/easier to just use a traditional winged corkscrew opener. Better yet, just screw up all that antiquated crap with wine bottles that are corked/sealed, just go for wine with screw caps instead, much better in every way. It's hard to say how to rate this E&EY Ah-So opener which is a fine Ah-So knife at a great price but as such is not as effective as a winged corkscrew which is not as effective as such is like a screw cap. I think I'll give this E&EY Ah-So 4 stars without commitment, but in the meantime I hope wine corks and cork openers go away soon.

Pros
  • Bottle Opener
Cons
  • So far, so good
