maybe I have a lemon. I measured wood for a cabinet project. At first everything on contacts showed around 5.7-5.9%, then mostly 0% and sometimes around 5.4-5.9%. then it's almost always done 0% with pins. Next I tried the seal on the same wood and it generally showed 7.4-7.9%. This difference between pens and pad is whether or not the Kem-Aqua body finish can be applied; Low readings are okay, but block readings are outside of the target range. What is right? I do not know. I am sending it back and will either order another of the same or a different device. Pin probes are fine 99% of the time as I usually use them to test wood, but if I need to test something on my drywall I would prefer probes with gaskets. I'd probably compare it to a lumber supplier's meter and save it if it's around, but with probes that only read part of the time it's useless to me. Update: I ordered another one and really wished this thing would work: it was the worst. 1) It reads the full 10% difference between the pad and pin sensors and 2) It turns itself on. It's in the box and out. I heard a beep and checked it; it was included. I turned it off and put it back in the box. A few minutes later it happened again.
