Tired of fuel pumps leaking oil I bought an expensive Carter fuel pump. In the beginning it worked great with good constant pressure. After about six months (maybe 5,000 miles) the car started smelling of gas and mileage dropped. The last thing I suspected was a new fuel pump. Of course, after ruling out all other possibilities, I found that gasoline was dripping from the bottom of the fuel pump. I took it apart and found that the plate on the diaphragm had broken in half and punctured the diaphragm. The gas seeped through a layer of cloth and exited next to my exhaust. I think the manufacturer would like to know about this apparent defect; However, when I look at the one-year warranty, I see that the manufacturer includes many disclaimers to ensure that they rarely have to deal with faulty parts. In my case, using my heavy duty Carter fuel pump in autocross voids the Carter warranty. Fuel pumps at cheap parts stores are better.
