They just give a false sense of protection that the delusion will go away the first time your shin makes contact with something/someone. There is a small gap between the shin padding and the leg padding - that gap is the devil! There are other issues with the way they were made (threads coming loose, useless velcro, very tight knee area (no)), but nothing of which is really important because these are glorified socks. I don't know what they could be used for, but certainly not something that kicks or can be kicked. Save your money and your shins and buy some. still.
