Sand sticks well for thermometers and timers
Very often the sand gets stuck and the timer stops. You have to shake it a bit to get it working again, so it's not very accurate. We use it for home schooling so it's a bit of a chore because I think my son spends more time making sure the sand still goes than it actually works.
