New castle design ruins everything!

I have had this inexpensive Evenflo gate for many years and it has always worked well as temporary pet or child protection. This shorter model was needed as a "guard rail" at the bottom of the stairs so I bought this without looking at the design. Imagine my annoyance when I received the gate and found Evenflo RUINED this product by changing the locking mechanism! Ancient gates have a simple "U" shaped piece of metal that "clicks" to connect two wooden arms together. The new gates have a fully enclosed plastic element that fully encloses the two handles; In order to lock or unlock the levers, the piece of plastic has to "slip off" - and this movement is achieved just by pushing or lifting a piece of plastic. He was pressed so hard against my goal that I doubted I was doing it right because he seemed to be in place all the time! Once I moved it it was almost impossible to return to the locked position. Luckily I leave the gate in place as it can be stepped over; If I had to move the gate normally, forget it! And I'm sure the piece of plastic that flexes to open and slide might break sooner rather than later given the force required to do so.

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Not as thick as other picks
