2005 Lexus ES300 Engine Light Code Fix -

I have a 2005 Lexus ES300 and I've been going insane trying to figure out codes P4002, P4004 and P4006 that keep the check engine light on. The OBDII gauge just said there was an EMC leak. Long story, short version. The new OBDII gauge suggested replacing the cap, and some reviewers suggested buying that cap, removing the o-ring, and replacing that o-ring with the old cap. Well, this page swapping only takes a few minutes with a small screwdriver. Tip: Liquid silicone (not WD-40, not Teflon spray - silicone spray) has the ability to rejuvenate old rubber. Recreational divers invest heavily in their wetsuits and have found that after swimming in chlorine filled pools for certification, applying a silicone spray keeps their wetsuits looking new. The same goes for applying it to your O-rings. Just spritz some silicone spray on the o-ring and let it set, wipe with a damp cloth and it will add years to a new o-ring or can help repair an old o-ring. Anyway, I removed the original O-ring. ring, sprayed on a new O-ring and put it on the original cover. It now snapped onto the gas tank with a much stronger connection; and the problems with the code are gone. In retrospect, that makes sense. Over time, removing the cap and exposure to the gas vapor will destroy the rubber. This O-ring wears out and will eventually need to be replaced. It's a lot cheaper than a $20 OEM replacement. And replacing the O-ring means the original cover and cable stay in the car. Fast, easy and complete repair. And for $8 - well, the store charges $50 just to find out, right?

Pros
  • Replacement OE gas cap to replace a lost or worn gas cap.
Cons
  • Almost never
