Review on Ade Advanced Optics AO 81150 14 Refractometer by Devon Holmes

Prepare a standard sugar solution for calibration.

I've only used it once but I've been impressed, especially given the reasonable price. It seems solid enough and it worked as intended. I like the little flat foot on the bottom that keeps it flat on the counter and prevents it from rolling away. Other reviewers point out that since 0 isn't a point on the scale, the calibration instructions don't make sense. In fact, the instructions appear to be for a different model. To calibrate this model, first prepare a standard sugar solution. Using the gram scale, I measured 67g white sugar + 33g water to get a standard of 67 Brix (Brix = mass percent sugar). Make sure the sugar is completely dissolved, which may require heating. My device's calibration was within a few units, which is about as good as you would expect. (Remember that the accuracy of this calibration check depends on the accuracy of your weight measurements.)
