Review on πŸ”§ Liftmaster/Chamberlain/Sentex 41A2817 Gear Kit: Enhance Garage Door Performance by Chris Meers

Great DIY kit, make sure you know the part numbers you need

This kit was just what I needed when the worm drive was chewing up my old gear. It even comes with a pretty good guide on how to disassemble the old parts, install the new ones, and adjust the door. If that doesn't help, there are plenty of videos on YouTube that will help you. You can do this repair yourself inexpensively, it took a few hours or so. The hardest part is removing the motor and reinstalling it without help, and removing and reinstalling the pins that hold the gears. I knocked the pins out with a hammer and a large set of nails to clamp them in a vise and found that a really big screw, flat rather than pointed, actually worked better than a tapered set of nails. Don't bump into your new nylon gear when you put the pins back in. You will most likely not need all of the parts shown, most washers and everything that was in good condition and recyclable on my parts. A tip: do not go without replacing the worm drive, even if the existing one still looks good! Even if the fit is exactly the same, the old one will most likely have at least some wear and may eat into your new gear faster than a new worm drive. Replacing the worm gear is half the battle, you'll have to remove the motor, but overall it's not that bad. I'm not sure why other reviewers think it's missing bearings or other parts that might need replacing. Neither the gear assembly nor the worm gear used bearings that I could see, they just went through metal bushings that I had just lubricated and reused. Maybe my knife model is different from yours. Also be very careful when looking for part numbers from other reviewers that will lead you to a fully assembled gear set (most often I see 41C4220A in the shortlist). This kit does not fit all models, even if this kit is somewhat universal for a large number of models! I have a belt drive and if you look closely at the tip of the sprocket in this kit it's for chain drive. Please ensure you have the correct part number from Sears Parts Direct before ordering.
